How Does an Ipod Click wheel?

Under the plastic surface of the click wheel, there are four mechanical buttons (Menu, Back, forward, play / pause), and is there a button in the center (select).

There are five buttons and five contacts corresponding to the motherboard. By clicking, for example, the right side of the wheel while you're listening to a song, the wheel pushes down the forward button. Part underside of each rubber button is metal, so pressing that completes the circuit on the motherboard. The motherboard tells the processor this circuit is complete, and processor tells the operating system to fast-forward through the song.

The Click Wheel touch function allows us to move through lists, adjust the volume and fast forward through a song by moving your fingers around the wheel stationary. It works much like a laptop touchpad. In fact, the company that supplied Click Wheel for the 4G iPod was Synaptics, best known for making laptop's touchpad. For the 5G, Apple created its own proprietary Click Wheel design based in the same capacitive sensing principle as the previous Synaptics designed Click Wheel.

Under the plastic covering the click wheel, there is a membrane metal embedded channels. Where the channels intersect, a positional address is created, like coordinates on a graph.

In its most basic form, a Capacitive sensor system works this way: The system controller supplies an electrical current to the network. Metal chains forming the network are the drivers – leading electricity. When another conductor – for example, the finger – is on the network, the current flow to the finger wants to complete the circuit. But there is a piece of nonconductive plastic on the road – the click wheel cover. So the charge builds up on the grid point that is closest to the finger. This buildup of electrical charge between two conductors is called capacitance.
The closer the two conductors are without touching,
the greater the capacitance.

The "perception" the system comes with the driver. The Click Wheel controller (see above) is programmed to measure changes in capacitance. The greater the change in capacitance at any given time, the closer to the finger should be at that point. When the controller detects a certain change in capacitance, it sends a signal to the microprocessor. By moving finger around the wheel, the load moves accumulates around the wheel with it. Whenever the controller senses capacitance at a given point, it sends a signal. So is like the Click Wheel can detect speed of motion – the faster we move our fingers around the wheel, the most compact of the current signals sent. And as the microprocessor receives the signals, performs the corresponding action – increasing the volume, for example. When the finger stops moving around the wheel, the driver fails to detect changes in capacitance and stops sending signals, and the microprocessor stops increasing the volume.
