Volkswagen Karmann Ghia? Best year?
My son has been taken with the VW Karmann Ghia. He has expressed a strong desire to buy one of these cars and restore for personal use. He lives in British Columbia, Canada, and will probably try to source a car there or down in California. What were the best years for these cars? And how were the convertibles? Their summits were as good as the beetles?
I am looking for a 1971-1974 model. In late the 70 or so to update the rear swingarm to the IRS (independent rear suspension) and made them 12V. They also went to the sought dual port 1600cc engine. Now some of the older models were updated to 12V, dual ports and had put in them, but they lack the IRS. I would look to me a coupe, a lot moisture and snow and ragtops do not mix! Now he realizes the original heaters were not the best, made gas heaters as an option, but are difficult to find today. I had a few, including one that put a newer engine water cooled rabbit in it, solved the problem of heat? Good Luck search, I would try to find one such as rust free as possible, what little heat they receive the value system has to run through the body!
