Recognition of the Hot Rod Automotive Arts
Once upon a time a few years ago, if you went to an art exhibition as the night AFA Saturday before the competition show Pebble Beach, all he saw was represented Classic Cars, cars especially before the war as Duesenberg, Bentley, etc.
Then representations of Muscle Cars began in crawling, cat's feet so to speak, but this was inevitable because some of the artists larger cars of today are former ad as Art illustrators who painted the immortal Fitzpatrick Grand Prix Pontiac Gto and illustrations. At 20 years, was working with Howard "Dutch" Darrin, the design of four-door 1940 Packard.
Tom Fritz, Ventura, CA, was one of the first artists American visual arts to "break the mold" and do not represent the cars he grew up, Marchand et LeTourneau Bugattis but "Hot Rods" good ol 'which saw in the streets of San Fernando, a suburb of Los Angeles. vivid childhood memories of Tom motorcycle and car cultures prevalent in southern California during the 60 and 70 years are reflected in their work.Among customers are Harley Davidson and his paintings hang in many corporate collections and museums such as the NHRA Museum.
And then, like in the garden of Pebble Beach, hot rods appeared. Oh, the painters, many of them were familiar with hot rods, many devil property or lust after '32 Ford "Deuce" roadster in his youth, but he never wanted to admit in our conversations at events like Pebble Beach, where he talked about all the Hispano-Suiza, Erdmann and Rossi 540Ks, James Young Phantoms and the like.
But now the secret is out. They all Hot Rodders. Largely because a car is a car and if mechanical we love it.
Perceptions of hot rodding that have appeared in the arts so far are steeped in history, eg paints of hot rods running on the dry lake beds where hot rodders who ran even before the Second World War. Representations are more modern setting more rare, but recently there has been a flowering of the "cruise-ins, car shows improvised in places such as drive-in restaurants across the country.
And then there is the problem of cliché-commercial if it shows a hot rod in a drive-in restaurant (the type where the waitresses on roller skates deployed to take order), then run the risk of painting something the retro-theme commercial restaurants are still currently operating.
And once you've opened Pandora's box, How far to go, because there is a deep dark secret about hot rods. Hot rods neat and tidy now are one thing, but basically if the research the genre, you discover that there is another vein of hot rod called the rat rodding "." Because back in the hot day rodders had money enough to buy scarves Rajo Smitty or axes, but did not have enough money to paint the car and they ran in the foreground. There is a subtext throughout / gender rodders hot have no intention of terminating their cars to normal "finished" car standards. For them, a statement outside the law in all four wheels leave it unfinished.
Call it being "in your face."
One of the first books to show this side of the world was the rustic art car by Hot Rod Barry Gifford with David Perry to take the raw footage of the cars built by some looking rough ("wife beater" t-shirts and lots of tattoos) dudes. Perry also wrote the film Wild at Heart. This book contains the time when the Steering Wheel made it a "bad" kind – almost as bad as riding a Harley.
There was a real life example of the hot rod meets art I saw a couple of years in the AFAS tent at Pebble at his party. It was when Chip Foose, a young designer who has worked for the Detroit automakers, but now is famous for its hot rod designs, came to his tent in a Ford Roadster, the car filled with aircraft parts such as exhaust from a fighter of the Second World War!
Artists discharge of the store to see your hot rod and had a lot of admiration expressed, indicating that, at the bottom of many famous artists born in the United States to represent the Classic Car is a Hot Rodder I knew the names of Bill Cushenberry, Dean Jeffries and Gene Winfield long before he ever heard of Sergio Pininfarina and Giugiaro Giorgetto ….
