Open Technology Source: The cost at the enterprise level
Summary
Open source software has generated much interest, especially following a slowdown in the economy. This has forced many Information Technology (IT) departments to reduce spending. One of the main reasons for open source technology is being considered by most IT departments is because technology open source is perceived as free. While the perception is not altogether true, the article will discuss an example of real cost savings of technology open source as a system solution company. All costs related to the implementation of an open source server operating system, including hardware costs to run the operating system software, training costs to configure the operating system software, support costs for maintaining the operating system software, and the salaries of the staff to manage the operating system software will be recognized in this article.
Open Source Technology – The cost at the enterprise level
Open source refers to any program whose source code is available for use or modification, users or other developers see fit. (Historically, manufacturers of proprietary software have generally not made the code source available.) open source software is usually developed as a public collaboration and freely available (Open Source, 2008). When companies are deciding on the appropriateness of using open source products compared to commercial products the benefits of both options are obvious. Products usually trade for visible features (giving marketing advantage) in difficult to measure qualities such as stability, security and similar attributes less glamorous. Some experts describe this as the quality characteristics versus (Advantages of using open source, no date). This paper examines the firm-level cost of a system of open source technology. The various factors mentioned in this document include the cost of software code open, the cost of open source hardware, the cost of open source training to support this platform, and wage requirements for administrators open source. For the purposes of this study, the total cost of ownership of a database server open source production will be discussed in detail.
There are many different options of distribution or 'models' a technology manager can choose from that are considering an open source operating system. Linux is freedom and choice, so one has much freedom to choose the flavor of Linux that best suits the needs of the business (Linux Distributions, nd). common flavors of Linux include:
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux
- Linux Mandrake
- The Fedora Project
- Debian Project
- Knoppix
- SUSE Linux
- Slackware Linux
- MEPIS Linux
- Ubuntu Linux
- Xandros
- OS PCLinuxOS
- Linspire
Jim Klein (2009) write that the total cost of ownership (TCO) can be defined as the sum of acquisition costs and maintaining a computer network. This includes the cost of hardware and software technology – the client computers, servers, software, printers, network equipment providers external service
- Direct labor – those responsible for purchasing, training, implementation, management and support of the computing environment
- indirect labor – the time spent by users in training, which deals with computer and network problems, and the effect of the computer or network downtime.
Red Hat Linux is one of the supported Linux operating systems on the market. Red Hat provides operating systems for individual users and large companies. When the pricing system of operation is very important to know the hardware that the operating system resides on. For example, make a difference whether the operating system is a Dual-or quad. For the purposes of this work, the server you want to install Red Hat is a quad Intel processor. Because this server is a production server, 24 / 7 support is required. According to Red Hat, the best license for this configuration option is the 'Red Hat Enterprise Linux Advanced Platform Premium Subscription "(Operating systems for servers, nd). When you subscribe to a subscription to Red Hat, is leasing the use of this software. With the signing Premium Red Hat Enterprise Linux Advanced Platform is obtained as follows:
- Unlimited CPU processors
- Unlimited virtualized guests
- Red Hat Global File System and Cluster Suite
- Web and phone based comprehensive support
- 24×7 Coverage
- A critical response hours (4 hours of normal response time)
- Red Hat Network Update
- Product Updates
- Installation media and documentation
- Covered under the Open Source Assurance program
- Server applications to include ISV applications, Apache, Samba, NFS, FTP, Tomcat, MySQL and PostgreSQL
For the purposes of this work, the server software runs Red Hat will be a Dell PowerEdge Energy Smart Quad Core Intel Xeon L5410 server. This server comes with 8 GB of RAM and March 1973 gig hard drives. The cost of this server is $ 6,250.00 (Dell, Select Components, nd). This equipment is approved by Red Hat supported hardware platform.
The skill sets needed to support an open source environment requires a person who understands fully how each component works in an environment. In most environments this person's title would be a Linux administrator. A Linux administrator will be able to a variety of skills. Jay Beal (2004) provides a set of Linux administrator's skills should include security, operating system hardening, software installation, hardware installation, system evaluation, problem solving and intelligence gathering (Essential Skills Linux, 2004).
Security in any environment is essential. A Linux administrator must understand that any port on any server is venerable to attack. Each port must be into account and the Linux administrator needs to know what are the log files to monitor all traffic from the port. The log files should be monitored daily by malicious attacks. In the case of an attack, a Linux administrator should know how to recover from a server that has crashed.
Most facilities default server install more services than are usually necessary. A Linux administrator needs to be aware of the purpose of the server and specifically understand what services need to be running, but more importantly, what services need not be in operation. The services need not be running should go Linux and the manager has to recognize these services and shut down services with the ports they use.
At some point, the server may need software and / or hardware upgrades. A Linux administrator must be prepared to apply updates or patches to software updates. Software patches can require more hardware to run optimally. In this case, a Linux administrator should be comfortable to update the hardware, if necessary.
By Finally, the Linux administrator must be able to evaluate the system and if there is concern, research the problem and find the solution. Because the software code is mostly open support of the "community" which can be tedious to find solutions to complex problems. If the administrator of Linux is fortunate, support is paid when the subscription is obtained. If support is not paid, the administrator of Linux has to rely on good research skills to solve the problem.
Finding a good Linux administrator to manage outdoor environment code is hard to do. When found, it is obvious that they are in great demand by the requirements wages are more demanding. An experienced Linux administrator who is certified industry demand as much as $ 90k – 120k per year if he / she is considered an employee (Full time Salary Search, nd). Linux contractors range from $ 60.00 – $ 120.00 per hour.
One of the benefits of having an environment is open source training courses are usually at a reasonable price. The only difficulty is finding a training center that specializes in technology Open Source training. Most 3-day classes range from $ 1,200 to $ $ 1,400 per class. Most classes 5-day from $ 1800 – $ 2200 dollars per class. If the administrator of Linux is a good self there are many online options that he / she can exploit. Many websites offer free training videos online and free training manual for anyone interested in taking advantage of them.
Obviously, the concept open source technology is far from being truly free. However, many experts agree that the total cost of ownership is less than it would if the software business was being used. Dan Orzech (2002) writes that the cost of Linux is about 40% of Windows, and only 14% of the Sun Microsystems Solaris based on a study of different operating systems over a period of three years. Below is a table summarizing the total cost of ownership of an atmosphere of open base the source.
Total Cost of Ownership
(Annual)
Service Description
Cost
Linux OS Software including Premium Support
$ 1,299.00 per year
Administrator Linux
$ 100,000 per year
Continuing Education
$ 1,500.00 per year
Total Cost
$ 102,799.00 per year
Total Cost of Ownership
(From a one-time costs)
Server Hardware
Purchase price $ 6250.00
Total Cost at once
$ 6,250.00
As you can see from the table above, the open source technology is not free. Open source proponents and property companies disagree about the total cost of ownership. Its proponents argue that even if open source requires more experience, the total cost of ownership is ultimately lower. The companies argue that the expertise required is daunting, and other costs of proprietary solutions are exaggerated (Open Options, 2005). Yes, there are some ways in which prices could be reduced. The Linux administrator can be hired on an "as needed" basis. It is also possible buy a server with fewer features and cost less if the processor was a factor when purchasing hardware. The training may be minimized or limited including online training only. Even with all this being said, the myth that open source technology is free is simply not a true statement especially in a production environment. However, open source technology is the preferred technology in many IT departments for reasons of reliability.
