In the U.S., which is 25 million years. Motorcycle Travel Guide Romania – Highway To Die For
It is mid-summer in Romania and I'm about to die.
Storm force winds are shrieking light poles and horizontal rain strikes me as I struggle to control bullets heavily loaded my motorcycle Honda Varadero on broken pavement. I'm on my way into the center of Bucharest and wishing I was somewhere else.
Surrounded by suicide-impatient drivers who are pushing the bike with his bumper and avoiding one-way fencing works trenches filled with swirling brown floodwaters, I think things can not get any worse. Then see what else you can definitely …
The car ahead of me in raising air, collapses and slides to one side when you touch an obstacle on the road. Now I can see what it is: the shiny steel rail tracks across the street to 45 degrees. These lanes are a total of six inches above the surface of the road.
"God mine! "I groan," They can not expect us to spend on them? "
Aware that no other alternative, I stand on the step as the bell is rung by my side. A quick glance to my left confirms my worst fears. It is a tram. You are about to cross the road at the same moment when it reached its tracks. Not no time to stop. I'm going to die.
There are moments in life when one has to make a snap decision. I crack open the throttle Varadero and the great cylinder V-wave forward. As my bike at the last moment to hit the wet steel angles about that fence, crashes and accidents in the first one, then two skids.
Miraculously, I'm still on the bike, still standing, and the tram has lost me. Ugh! Then I remember my wife Viv, Honda Transalp riding her right behind me. Omygod!
I turned to look over his shoulder, just in time to see her bounce on his bike lanes only feet in front of the tram moving. By some miracle they both did.
Many others were not so lucky. The next day, while watching TV news from a hotel of bound floods in neighboring Bulgaria, we found that the storm had swept nightmare houses, roads and bridges. Cars Trucks, buses and pedestrians had been taken in the biblical flood. The 62 people died in floods, falling trees or lightning. Thousands more homeless.
What the hell are we – a couple of grandparents dithery – doing all this riding on our bikes? Were we crazy?
The answer was obviously YES. But we were crazy for a reason. We had left home in Norfolk to visit projects abroad charity EveryChild Children in the UK and, hopefully, raise some publicity for their good works in the process.
Inspired by Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman Long Way Round trip when they visited UNICEF operations in Eastern Europe, we realized we could do something similar, but without the TV crew, clips, medical and vehicles support. We knew it would in 12 countries across the road and watch until something like 5000 miles, but we had no idea what we were letting ourselves in for.
