I am a high school graduate attending CC. How I can make myself a better candidate to join the LAFD soon?
I know I can take Fire Science / CPR courses, but what other thing I can add to my resume to make me unique in the selection?? Thanks!
many departments Fire give priority to people with military experience. I served in the army, and many of my friends in the armed forces were there just so they could get work in a Fire Department when it fell. Not sure about all the branches, but the Coast Guard and Marine Firefighting offer OM, called Controlmen Damage. They send you to school to learn firefighting techniques and knowledge of different types of equipment. It could also be a health service Technical or "Corpsman," the equivalent of an EMT. Obviously, this does not help soon, because it would be a commitment of several years, but I imagine there are many competition for the Framework Decision in Los Angeles, and this would give a 1-up.
Fire Department Sends Five The intervention teams to Wildfire Sites
California wildfires once again attracted the attention of the nation during a period of about two weeks beginning in mid-October 2007. Overall responsibility for California's efforts to prevent and combat forest fires is owned by CAL FIRE, the Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. However, a number of local counties, from Marin, Kern and Santa Barbara Ventura, Orange and Los Angeles, are paid by CAL FIRE to provide services though nominally a wildfire State responsibility.
While most of the damage caused by wildfires in October 2007 was in San Diego, firefighters from the Fire Department of Los Angeles (LAFD) however, responded to several fires in Los Angeles County. According to the website LAFD firefighters City firefighters extend both to the call Buckweed fire near Agua Dulce, about eight miles north of Los Angeles, and called Canyon fire, a forest fire about eight miles west of Los Angeles near Malibu, California. In general, the LAFD deployed five intervention teams comprising about 150 firefighters during the October crisis of forest fires.
The Fire Department of Los Angeles is considered well prepared to serve the fire prevention and fire fighting needs second largest city in the United States. Launched in 1886 as a fire service amalgamated paid volunteer services were formed in the 1870s, the LAFD has grown from its initial complement of four fire stations serving 50,000 residents to rank among the departments of the nation's largest fire. Today, more than 3,600 firefighters over 100 uniformed man fire stations across metropolitan Los Angeles, where more than four million people rely on the LAFD for a wide range of services for fire prevention and fire fighting. The Department EMC also provides services, mitigation of hazardous materials and disaster response services.
An important but often overlooked part of the force that includes five ships firefighters who protect the Port of Los Angeles. Located on the San Pedro Bay, about thirty miles south of the city Los Angeles, the Port of Los Angeles is the largest container port in the United States with a container volume of 7.4 million TEUs in 2004, the latest year for which figures this type are available. More than one million cruise passengers each year also pass through the port, which is by far the largest West Coast facility cruise.
Five ships of the fire guard the Port of Los Angeles by the fires that have the potential to be as devastating as the California wildfires 2007. The newest of them, Lawrence Warner, is a power of 105 feet, capable of pumping 38,000 gallons of water per minute at a height of 400 feet. The Lawrence Warner replaced more LAFD fire boat, the 78-year-old Ralph J. Scott, in April 2003.
