The history of Guildford-Part 1
Guildford is a place found in England. It is also the county town of Surrey. At Guildford one would be able find the district headquarters of Guildford and the administrative offices of southeast England. Guildford had been twinned with a town called Freiburg in southern Germany. In addition, Guildford can be found at about 50 km southwest of London. Like many other places around the world, Guildford also has a rich historical past. Let take a look.
The town of Guildford had been founded by Saxon settlers after the Roman Empire had withdrawn from Britain. The name was chosen by an old trail crossed the river Wey through a ford. The River Wey is a tributary of the River Thames. Moreover, a ford is a place where a river that can be crossed, either on horseback or in a vehicle. This probably can explain the second part of the name of Guilford. As for the first part, which could have been of gold instead of brotherhood. Gold may be referred to the golden flowers that probably grew near the ford.
Moreover, in Guildford one may be able find places like Guildford club model railway, a local bar called Astotlat and model train Astotlat Circle. These can be considered as reminders of the exceptional Guildford history. A castle named the Guildford Castle also adds to the beauty of the city. It is believed that this castle could have been built during the Saxon era. The castle can be used for purposes of battle and in places like the way the pilgrims and Ford itself could have been easily identified from there. In other words, the Guildford castle may have been used as a control tower to protect the region east and west of the country. Windsor Castle and the Tower of London may have been once used in a similar manner to protect the river Thames.
Furthermore, in the Battle of Hastings, a man known as William the Conqueror won Guildford and surrounding areas nearby. William the Conqueror was a Norman castle and Guildford rebuild a classic Norman style. The castle was built this way to scare the conquered population of Guildford at the time. Over time, the risks of war diminished and was therefore The castle became a royal hunting lodge. This idea was adequate as the Guildford Castle was located near Windsor Great Park. The castle may have been visited by the King John and King Henry III on numerous occasions. Some parts of the castle that was destroyed over time may have been restored during the Victorian era also in 2004. The rest of the land, now would be a wonderful public garden.
During 1995, a discovery was made in Guildford revealed an old Jewish house of prayer called a synagogue. The synagogue can be seen as one of the oldest in Western Europe.
