The events of Reconstruction are said to have cast a long shadow over race relations for future generations?
Reconstruction was used to punish the slaves for getting their freedom. In 1896 a U.S. Supreme Court decision Plessy v Ferguson set up the separate, but equal facilities for blacks and whites. This began what were known as the Jim Crow laws which made it almost impossible for blacks in the South to have the same benefits as white citizens did.
