Don’t worry. This is perfectly normal for male bettas. It’s not just a sign of him wanting to breed; it’s also what they do to mark their territory. (Bettas are aggressively territorial, as I’m sure you know.) They often blow nests when they see female fish, because they want to breed, or when they see other male fish or their own reflection because they think their territory is being threatened.
Other people have said that it’s a sign that your male betta wants to breed and that you must get a female betta for him to breed with. Please, please, PLEASE do not follow this advice. Breeding bettas is an EXTREMELY complicated procedure due to their aggressive nature and if you don’t know what you’re doing, you are likely to end up with one if not two dead fish. Furthermore, it is impossible to breed healthy bettas in a one-gallon tank.
One last thing: You must change your water more often than once every two weeks. For a one-gallon bowl, you should be doing at least 75% changes every three or four days. Any less than that and you will get ammonia building up in your tank which will make your betta very ill. I know many people say that it’s not a good idea to change water so often, because you will get rid of the “good bacteria” in the water and because you will stress out your fish. However, “good bacteria” will only build up in properly cycled tanks (which are much larger than 1 gallon) and leaving ammonia build-up in your tank is much more likely to stress your fish out than a water change. So please clean his tank more often.
If you want, you can get a sponge filter for your tank, but you will still have to do changes at least once a week.
