Bmw Sauber Rookie Takes a Point

The United States Grand Prix held last Sunday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is the first race this season that BMW Sauber’s Robert Kubica had to miss. The Polish Formula One driver was injured at the Canadian Grand Prix and was not cleared to participate at the seventh race of the Formula One season. Taking the spot behind the wheel of Kubica’s car was rookie German Formula One driver Sebastian Vettel.

On his first Formula One race, Sebastian Vettel gave BMW Sauber the only point they have to show for after the United States Grand Prix. The German driver finished eighth which gave him and team BMW Sauber a single point. Vettel started on the seventh spot in the grid after the qualifying session.

“It was fantastic, a lot of fun but a longer race than I ever imagined it to be,” says Vettel who recorded the most number of laps run at the practice session leading to the race. “I think I am quite lucky to get away with a point as the first corner was quite tight. I had an okay start, but not a Very Good one. When I saw the cars were close I decided to brake just a little bit later and then caught up quickly to those in front of me. To avoid an incident I decided to cut turn two and lost a lot of places. After that I was stuck in traffic which more or less destroyed our strategy.”

With only a single point to their credit at the United States Grand Prix, BMW Sauber now only led Renault by 14 points. Renault driver Heikki Kovalainen finished fifth which gave Renault four points. But Vettel’s performance at the United States Grand Prix is a good one overall although his car’s full potential was not exhibited. The car used by Vettel is the F1.07 with a BMW P86/7 engine complete with highly reliable BMW Spark Plugs.

“It is good to finish the first race and better still in the points. The car was working well. I could have been a bit quicker, but quite often I was stuck in traffic and it is extremely difficult to overtake here as the other guys are not sleeping and they know how to defend. In the end when I saw the chequered flag I was quite relieved. I am quite happy for me and the team who have done a fantastic job. I can only say thank you to all my mechanics and engineers who were supporting me,” says Vettel.

BMW Sauber’s Nick Heidfeld, on the other hand, was forced to retire after his Formula One car suffered from a hydraulic malfunction. Before that problem, Heidfeld was performing well. “I had a good start and overtook Kimi,” he said. “On the first stint my speed was okay, and it was only in the beginning that Felipe Massa could pull away a little bit. Later when I was braking for turn one the rear wheels just locked and I spun. When I wanted to get going again, I couldn’t get a gear, which was why Heikki Kovalainen could pass me,” the German Formula One driver explained.

BMW Sauber’s Technical Director summed up their team’s performance saying: “Sebastian gave away his chances for a good result in the first corner after the start… At least in the end we scored one point.”

How do Formula 1 teams work? What is the structure?

I’m a big fan of formula 1 but have never understood this. For example, they have the name of the team then the name of the car. Is a team owned by a company, like Red Bull for example and then the company chooses a car, for example redbull use a renault? If this is the case why do BMW Sauber use a ferrar? Why don’t they use a BMW? and lotuse use a cosworth? Does that mean if any team using a ferarri win, ferrari don’t care who it is even though there is a ferrari team? Also why do they have multiple teams? For example there is renault red bull but also a renault team and also mercedes gp and Mclaren Mercedes?

10 points for best answer.

Thanks.

All the teams are owned by parent companies:
eg
Mclaren, by the Mclaren Group
Mercedes GP, by Daimler Cars (owner and producer of MB road cars)
Renault, By Genii Capital (Renault have minority shares)
Virgin Racing, by Manor Motorsport

Each of these teams full names is followed by the engine manufacturer:
(although it seems stupid and obvious that Renault will have a Renault engine, you would think BMW Sauber would use BMW engines–however they don’t so having the engine manufacturer at the end of the name clarifies everything (BMW Sauber-Ferrari)).

same eg
Mclaren-Mercedes
Mercedes GP-Mercedes
Renault-Renault
Virgin Racing-Cosworth

In addition to this, the names are further lengthened by title sponsors, the teams get most of their capital from the title sponsor and as a result their livery (paint job) is ussually based on the corporate colours of that sponsor.

Vodafone Mclaren-Mercedes
Ferrari Marlboro-Ferrari
Mercedes GP Petronas-Mercedes
Redbull Racing-Renault
AT&T Williams-Cosworth
Virgin Racing Cosworth

The other teams do not have sponsors in their names.

BMW Sauber use a Ferrari engine because the team is no longer owned by BMW. It is quite complicated, but Mr Sauber owned the F1 team a few years back, when BMW engines powered Williams, then BMW wanted it’s own team so they bought Mr Sauber’s team and called it BMW Sauber. Now, BMW has pulled out due to last years recession so Mr Sauber bought the team back. The reason he has kept the name BMW Sauber is to do with getting a certain % of television money for competing in last years championship, wheras if they changed the team, they would not get any of the TV money for bthey would be classed as a new team. They need all the money they can get because all the sponsors went away when BMW quit, example: Petronas left and joined Mercedes. As explained earlier the full name becomes BMW Sauber Ferrari due to Ferrari power, probably the only engine that would fit in their car.
___________________________________________________
The reason that Lotus use Cosworth is because Lotus do not make engines, even for their road cars. I also think it was part of the deal they had to sign to get into F1 in the first place because the other new teams – Virgin Racing and Hispania Racing Team – also use Cosworth engines.
___________________________________________________
When Seb Vettel won his first ever race, it was at Monza (2008) while driving a Torro Rosso-Ferrari. The Tifosi were going wild because it was another Italian team, and it was also using a Ferrari engine. I would imagine that the factory Ferrari team would be a bit disheartened that a small team who work on a fraction of the Big teams budget could beat them using identical engines. This year Mclaren will be rivals to the factory Mercedes team, I believe Mclaren were unhappy at the way Mercedes kind of walked away from them.
__________________________________________________
There are two kinds of teams, factory and privateers.
Renault are a factory team, they make their own car and their own engine, they construct the whole car themselves at the Renault factory. The car makes came in to F1 with huge budgets to try and make good publicity for their road cars.
Red bull Racing-Renault pay to get Renault to supply them with engines and gearboxes, but the Redbull team designs and builds its own cars and then engineers come from Renault to help put engines into the cars, I guess it’s just another way for the engine makers to get more money. Mercedes has the best engine at the moment so lots of teams want that engine, that is another reason why their are so few engine makes in F1 just now. Toyota and BMW obviously weren’t good enough engines because no team uses them now.
