What Car Is The Mach 5 Based Off Of?
I think the original car may have been loosely based on the 1954-1955 Mercedes-Benz W196 Typ Monza, but I’m not completely sure.

What do you guys think? Any other suggestions of influences?
To C7S:
I hadn’t thought about the corvette, though I can’t see much of the C2 in it. The C3 looks quite similar in shape, but the C3 (1968-1982) wasn’t created until after Speed Racer first aired (1966). Ty for the suggestion!
To Malcolm T:
I agree that they both have similar front ends, but you have to keep in mind, powerboats like that didn’t exist pre-1966. Thnx for the suggestion though.
And good point with the D-type. Similar in looks and from the right era.
I don’t think it’s car based at all, it looks more like an F1 Power Boat to me. Or Blue Bird.http://www.bluebird-electric.net/bluebird_images/bluebird_k7_coniston_november_1957.jpg
With a bit of D-Type Jaguar thrown in.

I know what you mean about the F1 boat, but all I’m trying to say is that the back end of the car does look like old Merc or Jag, Racing Cars but the Front End looks more boat/ Jet Fighter or space craft inspired.
